Screen Size to Viewing Distance Chart

Sitting too far from a big screen wastes the detail you paid for, while sitting too close makes individual pixels or a soft image distracting rather than immersive, and the right distance depends directly on screen size and resolution. This chart gives recommended viewing distances based on established THX and SMPTE reference guidelines, so you can work out the right screen size for your actual room, or the right distance for a screen you already own.

THX recommended distance: for an immersive, cinema-like field of view

THX recommends a viewing angle of about 40 degrees for the primary seating position, which works out to a distance of roughly 1.2 times the screen's diagonal size. For a 65 inch TV, that means sitting about 78 inches (6.5 feet) away; for a 100 inch projector screen, about 120 inches (10 feet).

This closer, wider-angle distance is optimized for immersion, filling more of your peripheral vision the way a movie theater does, and assumes a high enough resolution source (4K for larger screens) that sitting this close does not reveal visible pixel structure.

SMPTE recommended distance: a more conservative, comfortable range

SMPTE's guideline targets a somewhat wider viewing angle range, generally recommending a distance of about 1.5 to 2 times the screen's diagonal size for a comfortable, less immersive but easier-on-the-eyes viewing experience. For a 65 inch TV, that suggests roughly 98-130 inches (8-11 feet); for a 100 inch screen, roughly 150-200 inches (12.5-16.5 feet).

This wider range suits general living room use better than THX's cinema-optimized distance, especially in households where the same screen is used for television, gaming, and movies rather than dedicated home theater viewing.

Resolution changes how close you can sit

A 4K screen supports sitting closer than a 1080p screen of the same size before individual pixels become visible, because it packs four times the pixel density into the same physical area. This is why THX's more aggressive, closer distance guideline assumes a 4K or higher source; sitting that close to a 1080p screen of the same size would reveal visible pixel structure and screen door effect that undermines the picture quality you are trying to maximize.

For projector screens specifically, image quality at close distances also depends on the projector's native resolution and lens quality, not just the screen size, so a budget 1080p projector stretched to a very large screen size may look softer up close than the same size image from a sharp 4K projector.

Working backward: choosing a screen size for a fixed seating distance

If your seating distance is fixed by the room, divide that distance by 1.2 for a THX-style immersive size, or by 1.5 to 2 for a more conservative SMPTE-style size, to find the largest screen diagonal that fits your space comfortably. A room with 10 feet (120 inches) of viewing distance suggests roughly a 100 inch screen for an immersive THX-style setup, or 60-80 inches for a more conservative SMPTE-style comfort range.

These are guidelines, not hard rules, and personal preference for image size versus detail visibility varies meaningfully between viewers, so treat the resulting number as a strong starting point to test against your own room and seating rather than an exact requirement.
