Dolby Atmos
An object-based surround format that adds height channels so sound can move above and around the listener, not just side to side.
Traditional surround sound assigns audio to fixed channels like front left or rear right. Dolby Atmos instead treats individual sounds as objects with a position in 3D space, then renders them dynamically across however many speakers a system has, including height or overhead speakers. That is what allows a helicopter or rainstorm to sound like it is genuinely moving above the room rather than just panning left to right.
Atmos can be delivered through dedicated in-ceiling or upward-firing height speakers that bounce sound off the ceiling, or increasingly through soundbars that use similar upward-firing drivers and processing to simulate the effect in a single unit. A full discrete height-speaker setup generally produces the most convincing overhead imaging, while soundbar Atmos is a simpler, more apartment-friendly compromise.
A common mistake is assuming any soundbar labeled Atmos will sound similar to a full 7.1.4 system, when ceiling height, room shape and furnishings all affect how well the upward-firing trick works. Another is not checking that a streaming source and receiver both actually support Atmos end to end, since a missing link anywhere in the chain quietly falls back to standard surround sound.
