Contrast ratio

Contrast ratio compares the brightest white a screen can produce against its darkest achievable black, and it has a bigger visible impact on perceived picture quality than resolution alone in most rooms. A display with a high contrast ratio shows deep, inky blacks alongside bright highlights in the same frame, which is what gives an image a sense of depth and realism rather than looking flat or washed out.

OLED displays generally lead in this area because each pixel can turn off individually for a true black, while LED and LCD panels rely on backlighting that can leak light into dark scenes, an effect often called blooming. Projectors face their own contrast challenge since ambient light in the room, or even light bouncing off walls, can raise the apparent black level well above the projector's native spec.

A common mistake is comparing manufacturer-quoted contrast ratio numbers directly across brands, since testing methods vary widely and are not standardized the way resolution is. A more reliable approach is checking independent reviews or viewing a display in person in lighting similar to the room it will actually be used in, particularly for projectors and rooms with any ambient light.
