Speaker sensitivity

How loud a speaker plays for a given amount of amplifier power, measured in decibels, which affects how hard an amp must work.

Speaker sensitivity, usually listed in decibels at one meter with one watt of input power, tells you how efficiently a speaker converts amplifier power into volume. A speaker rated at 90 dB sensitivity plays noticeably louder from the same amplifier wattage than one rated at 84 dB, which matters when matching speakers to a receiver's power output rather than assuming any speaker will get equally loud.

Low-sensitivity speakers are not necessarily worse, but they demand more amplifier power to reach the same volume, which can matter in a large room or when running many channels off one receiver's shared power supply. Pairing a low-sensitivity speaker set with an underpowered receiver can lead to strained, distorted sound at higher volumes even though the speakers themselves are capable of more.

A common mistake is comparing sensitivity ratings across brands without checking that they were measured the same way, since some manufacturers use more generous test conditions than others. Another is ignoring sensitivity entirely and focusing only on wattage handling, when in practice a well-matched sensitivity and amplifier pairing usually delivers cleaner sound than simply adding more raw power.
